MISSION Noise Control Foundation is a research and educational organization dedicated to stimulating the development of public policies to reduce the impact of noise on society. Noise Control Foundation, founded in 1975 in New York City as a 501(c)(3) organization under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, is now actively working on the formulation and promotion of public policies on the abatement and control of noise in the environment and in occupational settings. The sponsorship of workshops is one of the vehicles to accomplish this task.
2008 ACTIVITIES SOUTHAMPTON, UK: A CAETS workshop on transportation noise sources in Europe was held at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, Southampton, UK, on 2008 June 2 - 4. The title was “The Design of Low-noise Vehicles for Road, Rail, and Air Transportation” and was sponsored by the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK). The goal of the workshop was to identify and prepare an inventory of the technology available today for the design of low-noise vehicles, and to assess what needs to be developed in future technology for the reduction of transportation noise. This technology assessment will provide CAETS with background information and recommendations on the state of noise control technology.
DEARBORN, MICHIGAN, USA: A forum entitled “How Do We Stimulate Collective Action to Motivate the Public to Demand Quiet?” was held in Dearborn, MI, on July 29 during NOISE-CON 2008. The methods available to educate and motivate the public on the effects of excessive noise and the availability of low-noise products will be addressed. Topics such as the following will be covered: • Effective use of the media • Public education on the health threats of noise • Noise impact on children’s learning • Creating a demand for quiet products and simple labeling • Inspiring community respect and responsibility
SHANGHAI, CHINA: A forum entitled “Asia-Pacific Education in Noise Control Engineering” will be held at the International Convention Center, Shanghai, China, on 2008 October 27. The goals are: • To determine if the demand for noise control engineers in Asia-Pacific countries is greater than the supply provided by the universities. • To identify the components of a typical curriculum in noise control engineering. • To assess the ability of higher education to supply noise control engineers and identify the universities that offer curricula on noise control engineering. 2009 ACTIVITIES OTTAWA, CANADA: A second forum sponsored by the International Council of the Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS) will be held in 2009 August in Ottawa during INTER-NOISE 2009. The first workshop held in Southampton, U.K., in 2008 June considered transportation noise sources and the technology available to reduce this noise. The Ottawa forum will address non-vehicular noise sources worldwide in occupational, domestic, and community settings; and will assess the technology available today and what future technology is needed to reduce the noise emissions of these products.
Following this forum, a statement will be prepared for CAETS combining the results from Southampton and Ottawa. This statement will contain recommendations on the control of noise sources for circulation to policy-makers worldwide.
